Codex MicDuck
A little room to talk.
A small menu-bar app that lowers Spotify while Codex uses your microphone, then brings your music back.
Free & open source. The public installer is not available yet.
This will work for you if…
- You have an Apple silicon Mac M1 or later
- You’re running macOS 15 or later
- You use voice or dictation in the Codex desktop app
- You listen through the Spotify desktop app on that Mac
Getting set up
Once the download is available:
- Open the downloaded disk image and drag Codex MicDuck into Applications.
- Open the app and Spotify. Click the duck in your menu bar and choose Test Spotify Duck.
- Allow MicDuck to control Spotify when macOS asks. Then start talking in Codex.
Updates are manual: download a newer release when you want one.
Small app. Simple job.
MicDuck adjusts Spotify’s own volume, leaving your Mac’s system volume alone. If you change Spotify’s volume yourself while it’s lowered, your choice wins.
It checks whether Codex is using the microphone; it doesn’t record or listen to your audio. Everything runs locally, with no accounts or telemetry. In an ongoing Codex voice session, music stays lowered while the microphone remains open.
Need to allow Spotify control again?
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation and allow Codex MicDuck to control Spotify. You can also open Automation Settings from the duck’s menu.
